This website is a project dedicated to a fleeting technology; payphones. Being born in Cincinnati and living in the metro area my whole life, I started exploring and documenting these about a year ago. Why? Because you can no longer escape the internet. Technology that predates the modern internet such as the payphone, newspaper stands, taxis, letters, iPod, are slowly disappearing. You can no longer log off and leave internet behind at the library. The internet has invaded almost every aspect of our lives. It is in our pockets, our homes, our classrooms, our ears, our cars, our jobs etc., etc. It has broken our doors down and made itself comfortable. Even more so, the internet is now, more than ever, a weapon for evil rather than good. Everything that made the internet great has now been replaced by things like AI and corporate greed. Companies and algorithms feed us dopamine on a schedule, and we are complicit. It is used to spew hate speech and incite violence; it radicalizes and never apologizes. For every 2 people the internet connects, it disconnects 3. Social media and FOMO are inventions entirely of the last 30 years. Everything is used by corporations to feed us advertising, and by governments to track and profile us. I wish I lived without a distraction constantly in my pocket, I do not wish to be connected 24/7, I wish for payphones.
